“Looking at Islamic Economy from Ottoman Experiences” Workshop Was Performed

The fourth of the workshop series entitled “Looking at the Islamic Economy from the Ottoman Experiences” was performed in the Sakarya University, Senate Hall of the Rectorate.

The workshop arranged by SAU Institute of Social Sciences (SBE) The Islamic Economy and Finance Department and Research Center for Islamic Economics and Finance (RECISEF). Vice Rector Professor Dr. Atilla Arkan, SBE Director Professor Dr. Fatih Savaşan, Middle East Research Center Director Professor Dr. Kemal İnat, Director of Educational Sciences Institute Professor Dr. İsmail Güleç, ISEFAM Director Assoc. Dr. Ömer Karaoğlu, Dean of the Faculty of Theology Professor Dr. Hacı Mehmet Günay and many academicians who are expert in their fields attended the workshop.

In the opening speech of the workshop Prof. Dr. Fatih Savaşan said that the theme of the workshop is the level of phosphorus market and prices. Prof. Savaşan who said that a framework was drawn to explain the contemporary concept and problems in the previous workshops stated that a huge gap related to the subject would also be filled. Then he emphasis that some subjects can not be directly transferred to today’s economic system when looking at the Islamic economy from the Ottoman experience and it must be acknowledged that there is much to learn about this subject.

RECISEF Manager Assoc. Dr. Ömer Karaoğlu also emphasized that recent studies on the Ottoman historical experience should be supported by new researches. Indicating that our work for Islamic economics carries a rich archival value in both theoretical and practical terms, Assoc. Dr. Karaoğlu said that the documents and information arise from discussions will provide important contributions to the world in the coming periods.

Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Atilla Arkan in his speech, stated that such workshops are very important in sharing the academic discipline in the academic environment. Prof. Dr. Arkan who mentioned the significance of the workshop in terms of understanding the historical continuity in the field of Islamic economics, added that the subject of Ottoman experience will be beneficial in this context.

After opening speeches, the workshop continued with presentations titled “Basic Parameters of Ottoman Economic Thought”, “Early Islamic History and Economic Development in the 19th Century Ottoman Thought”, “Economic and Social Life Revitalization Activities in Istanbul after the Conquest”, “A Commercial City Adapazarı and Customs in the Ottoman State”.
