Sakarya University Research Center For Islamic Economics and Finance (RECISEF) by “Agricultural Production Oriented Interest-Free A Financing Method: Selem and Applicability In Turkey” a workshop was organized.
Sakarya University hosted the workshop on October 4, were participated, Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University (IZU) Vice Rector and Director of Islamic Economy and Finance Research Center. Prof. Dr. Arif Ersoy, Istanbul University (IU) Director of Islamic Economics and Finance Research Center (ISIFAM) Assoc. Dr. Mehmet Saraç, IU Faculty of Theology teaching staff Prof. Dr. Servet Bayindir, Central Bank Member of the Bank Prof. Dr. Sabri Orman, Marmara University Faculty of Economics teaching staff Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, Ibn Khaldun University Faculty of Islamic Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Bilal Aybakan, SAU Faculty of Theology teaching staff Prof. Dr. Haci Mehmet Günay and and Mehmet Genç from the veteran chefs of the history of economics. Moreover, at workshop, which also includes representatives of the participation banks, BDDK and Soil Crop Office , both a contract type existing in Islamic law and a modern term interest-free finance product were evaluated in the fullest extent.
We are trying to provide whatever we want
Rector Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Elmas, was done in his speech at the opening of the workshop, said that they continued the work process in the social areas they started in some parts at university. Prof. Dr. Elmas which stated that they are trying to develop the center of and which ISEFAM is an ambitious center “We give support to these centers on space and staff. The results can be a guide to practitioners. These meetings need to be done more often and in business associations. We hope to continue collaborating on this subject. We are trying to provide whatever we want in these matters. I result to hope the for our country good results from here “he said.
What is Selem? For what purpose is used?
At workshop, which continuing all day, Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar stated that Selem was a source of finance for agricultural products and addressed the applications of Selem in the Ottoman period, the advantages within the Ottoman economic system and the risks it poses. In the second session of the program, Mücahit Ozdemir ISEFAM Research Assistant deal with examples of usage Selem’s at Islamic finances. Ozdemir stated, around the world what countries and for what purpose of Selem used that it would be healthier to application Selem through the non-bank institutions. In addition, Salih Ulev and Mervan Selcuk, one of the researchers of ISEFAM, presented two different model proposals on the subject mentioning the possibility of being used as a financing method for hazelnut producers of Selem today.
Model recommendations
The model proposal to be implemented through organizations such as the Soil Crop Office, the Agricultural Credit Cooperative and the Fiskobirlik, or with the inclusion of the participation bank, was followed with interest and attention by the participants. Participants emphasized the necessity of taking concrete steps at the point of pass on the cruelty by expressing positive opinions about the applicability of these models proposed in particular for hazelnut. Speaking at the afternoon session of the Prof. Dr. Arif Ersoy talked about the place and importance of Selem’s credit in ensuring production and consumption balance. Speaking at the last session, ISEFAM Director Assoc. Dr. Süleyman Kaya also made Islamic (philosophical) assessment of the practices of Selem in history and today.
Evaluation
Prof. Dr. Sabri Orman, who made the evaluation speech of the workshop held at Senate Hall of SAU Rectorate, said that he listened to the quality comments and analysis at the workshop and hope that this workshop would be a source of inspiration for new works. Prof. Dr. Sabri Orman congratulated all research center, in spesial of SAU ISEFAM, which working related to the subject. In addition, Prof. Dr. Orman stated that the workshop brings together many researchers from different disciplines and such activities would contribute to the development of science.
